Polyurethane powder coatings have several advantages: Excellent adhesion Excellent chemical resistance Excellent corrosion resistance Excellent flexibility Excellent hardness Good exterior durability |
Disadvantages: Restricted cure range Potential odor and smoke from cure Higher cost compared to other types of coatings |
Surface Preparation |
The substrate should be free of grease, oil, dirt, fingerprints, drawing compounds, any contamination, and surface preparation treatments to ensure optimum adhesion and coating performance properties.
|
Application |
A powder spray gun is used, which when triggered gives an electrostatic charge to the powder particles passing through it. As the parts to be coated are grounded, the powder is attracted towards the part via the electrostatic process.
|
Curing |
Once the powder is applied the parts are cured in an oven, which melts and cross-links the powder over the surface of the part and creates a tough, scratch-resistant, and beautiful finish.
|
1. Surface Preparation: Before applying the powder, the substrate must undergo thorough cleaning to remove any contaminants like oil, grease, or rust. This crucial step ensures proper adhesion and a flawless finish. The substrate is freed from dust, scale, rust, grease, dirt, and any oxide layers (for example on aluminum). |
2. Proper Grounding: The most common cause of application issues is poor grounding. There needs to be some kind of connection from your part - the substrate being coated - to that earthen ground, be it racks or hangers etc. Also, ensure that these connecting parts are clean, because if there is not good metal to metal contact the charge will not pass through as easily. |
3. Gun Settings: Your gun settings may actually be the problem. Too much powder flow and incorrect kV levels can negatively affect an application. Straight away, make sure that you have a good earthen ground. |
4. Regular Maintenance and Cleaning: A regular maintenance and cleaning system is a good process to have in place. Powder builds up on racks, electrodes, and hooks, and needs to be cleaned away regularly. |
5. Temperature Control: Proper temperature control is essential for a successful powder coating application. Too high or too low temperatures can cause issues such as insufficient gloss, discoloration, orange peel texture, pinholes, and air bubbles. |
6. Cleanliness: Keeping your workspace clean can help prevent contamination that could affect the finish of your powder coating. |
7. Powder Application Techniques: Different powder application techniques can result in different finishes. It's important to understand the specific requirements of the powder you're using and adjust your application technique accordingly. |
